We’ve got a panel discussion!

The Future of the Human/Machine Interface

Tuesday, October 19th, 7-9 pm
Hive at 55, 55 Broad Street, 13F, NY NY 10004
RSVP here.

Panelists: Irwin Chen, Jill Nussbaum, Dan Paluska, Ian Spalter

For many decades, we thought our future would be full of shiny gadgets that would make our lives easier, without necessarily changing how we lived. Now we know that we’re in the earliest stages of what may be tectonic cultural shifts, including transformations in the way we read, work, and perceive ourselves and others – and these changes will also impact the way we create future technologies. We know that our lives won’t look or feel like the ones that George and Judy Jetson lived, but what will our interactions with technology be like, and how will they change us? Join us for a panel discussion investigating the future of reading, personal informatics, and robotic, kinetic, and collaborative media. Socializing to follow!

Presented by Zeitgeist NYC and Hive at 55, Lower Manhattan’s coworking space. Suggested donation: a measly $5.

About Our Panelists

Irwin Chen: Irwin Chen got his BA in English Literature from Yale University in 1994, and spent one year in the Netherlands on a Fulbright studying design at the Jan van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht. He returned to New York where he began work as a digital designer, first for Jessica Helfand and later at Funny Garbage and 2×4. He is currently the founder of Redub LLC, an information design and interaction design consultancy based in Brooklyn.

Jill Nussbaum: For more than a decade, Jill Nussbaum has focused on creating smart and compelling digital experiences that influence behavior and add value to people’s lives.   By working with global brands such as Nike, Nokia, and T-Mobile, she has become fluent at extending product experiences to the digital space and across physical environments.  Currently, Jill is an executive creative director on R/GA’s Nike account, where she leads a multi-disciplinary team to develop innovative work.  She was a key player in designing the Nike+ platform, which Adweek named “Campaign of the Decade.”  Jill’s work has garnered a dozen industry awards including the Cannes Titanium Lion, Cannes Cyber Lion, Clio Interactive Grand, Clio Interactive Gold, and D&AD Black Pencil. Her “FlyOver Channel” concept was chosen as “Best in Category” in I.D. magazine’s 2009 Annual Design Review. She teaches interaction design at the School of Visual Arts and serves on the board of AIGA NY.

Dan Paluska: Dan Paluska (@thesixmil) is an artist and engineer who works in kinetic, robotic, and various other media. He has BS, MS and ABD from MIT in Mechanical Engineering. He has been on the Discovery channel, the cover of Wired magazine, and been the recipient of the Prixars Award of Distinction for Interactive Art (w/ Jeff Lieberman). He is inspired by the ideas from lean manufacturing, evolution, the open source community, and market economics and how these might help us to build tools that help us collaborate better. Currently he is working setting all of his information free.

Ian Spalter: With over a decade of digital media experience, Ian Spalter (@ianspalter) brings a high level of social media expertise to his position at R/GA. As executive creative director, Mobile & Emerging Platforms, he works across several accounts and leads projects focusing on social media and digital product design to heighten brand experiences and create long-term value for consumers.  Ian has designed social platforms for brands such as Nike and Nokia, and developed social media strategy for brands such as Walmart, L’Oreal, and HP.  Prior to R/GA, Ian worked as vice president of product management and user experience design at Community Connect, Inc., where he launched over 20 new products and increased traffic 20 percent and also launched the company’s first mobile initiative. Community Connect was acquired by Radio One in 2008.
